Tulsa VFW Post 577 Honors Flag Day With Flag Retirement Ceremony

On Flag Day, the Tulsa VFW Post 577 held a retirement ceremony for thousands of American flags.

Every year, the post collects between 2,500-3,000 flags to be retired on Flag Day. VFW officers said the ceremonies honor the flags and the veterans who consider them important symbols.

"That flag itself to us, has a service life just like a service member,” Tulsa VFW officer Joshua Starks said. “So, at the end of that service, when it becomes tattered and torn, when it can no longer be repaired, then it’s time to retire it and to do that with honors.”

Tulsa VFW post 577 accepts flags year-round. You can leave them in the post’s flag drop box or take them inside to the office.

“We know how much that flag means to them and they know how much it means to us,” Starks said.
