Sallisaw hospital roof damaged in storm

Straight-line winds tore part of the roof off the Northeastern Health System hospital in Sallisaw on Tuesday.

Our Oklahoma Weather Experts say winds just above the surface topped nearly 80 miles per hour on the radar.

Residents say the weather started moving in around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Three patients had to be moved to other hospitals. The Sallisaw city manager says no one was hurt.

Several homes in the area also have tree and roof damage, and several people are currently without power.

The Sequoyah County Emergency Manager says the priority right now is getting relief to the hospital.

After the storm pulled part of the roof off, leaders had to lay out sandbags after another round of rain moved through tonight.

One man who lives across the street from the hospital said he's never seen anything like this.

“I've seen some pretty bad storms in Sallisaw, but this right here is what really got me. I was shocked when I seen the hospital just come over and just have these pieces,” said Colton Hill. “I even have pieces right down here. It amazed me. I was generally in shock when that happened.”

Sallisaw leaders say there are a significant number of trees and power lines down, so restoration efforts will take some time.

The hospital is not taking patients at this time. An emergency room will be set up in the hospital's parking lot at midnight for people needing care.

The National Weather Service says it does not plan to survey damage in Sallisaw at this time.
